On the economics of health care
Article Abstract:
Health-care costs are not accelerating as rapidly as they were in the 1990s due to cost containment efforts including reduced government disbursements and competition from health maintenance organizations. However, the cost of new medical technology is still increasing while the salary benefits of nursing and medical education are dropping. Future cost-saving efficiencies may be in hospital utilization and ethical guidelines for the treatment of the dying. However, health insurance needs to respond to the dramatic increase in the elderly population as Baby Boomers age.

Health is making economy sick
Article Abstract:
Health care costs are increasing at a faster rate than other costs. The federal government is reimbursing a smaller percentage of health care costs for Medicare and Medicaid patients. This led to budget problems in 32 states in 1991. Households are assuming a greater share of health insurance costs as deductibles and premiums increase. Almost 20% of funds will be allocated to health services by 2000 unless there is a change in the health care system.

Benefit costs are slowing but they are not really falling
Article Abstract:
The slow-down in the increase of the cost of medical care benefits is a sign of cost-shifting, not a decrease in the actual cost of healthcare. Employers have been able to save by forcing their employees to accept higher deductibles and monthly premiums. This will not last when employees feel they can find work elsewhere. Increased competition amongst health care providers has also kept costs down, but this too is a temporary phenomenon.
