This article examines the opium industry in Afghanistan, Burma, and Turkey. The author, maintaining the United States has pressured the governments of these countries to crack down on poppy cultivation, discusses the historical, cultural, and economic value of poppies to the farmers and the difficulty of determining poppy cultivation for legitimate and illegitimate purposes.
