Participation of nongovernmental parties in the World Trade Organization: extension of standing in World Trade Organization disputes to nongovernment third parties
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) should not give standing to private parties, despite the limitations inherent in its judicial power and ability to resolve disputes. What the WTO needs is the ability to recognize societal values other than free trade in resolving disputes. This can be partially accomplished by including mediators that are not trade experts, but have some sense of trade's effect on society, on dispute resolution panels. Allowing standing to private parties, however, would only increase the influence of special interest and further promote free trade as the only value worth considering.

Participation of nongovernmental organizations in the World Trade Organization
Article Abstract:
Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) need to be allowed more involvement in the activities of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The lack of respect shown NGOs by GATT, the WTO's predecessor, was one of the main criticisms of that arrangement, and NGOs have long been recognized as constructive allies by other international organizations and nations alike. There is no excuse for not including NGOs, and doing so would only heighten suspicion of an organization that needs to be more transparent anyway.
