Perkins lands in California; the Seattle firm is enjoying an unusually successful start in a dream destination: Silicon Valley

Perkins Coie is a Seattle law firm transplanted to the Silicon Valley and one of he few non-California firms to have succeeded with such a transplant. The firm's Identifying the right new partners and a prior technology focus may have helped the firm succeed. These new partners included hires from Palo Alto's Venture Law Group, a firm from which other newcomers have found it nearly impossible to add to lateral hires. Perkins' client list sports well-known names in high technology and electronic commerce.

Departures, shock lead to Pettit's end
Article Abstract:
San Francisco law firm Pettit and Martin is dissolving after 40 years of practice due to economic problems. Employees said that the 1993 shootings at the firm's offices had no impact on the decision to close. The firm grew quickly in the 1980s but did not keep up with emerging areas of law and could not absorb the loss of key attorneys over the past two years.
