Professionalism and money
Article Abstract:
The two goals of professionalism and money face American lawyers as the 21st century approaches, presenting them with the task of balancing the two and deciding which is their priority. Since the 1970s, lawyers and society in general have been motivated by materialism, although some have dedicated themselves to public service, legal services to the poor and government service. It is to be hoped that their numbers will increase and more lawyers will realize that serving clients is the lawyer's most important goal.

Service to clients comes first; lawyers need to make the right ethical choices to produce the best results
Article Abstract:
Lawyers can use in ethical dealings with their clients an application of the Golden Rule developed by Michael Josephson, founder of the Josephson Institute of Ethics, Josephson calls this Golden-Kantian-Consequentialism, first the Golden Rule, then Kant's categorical imperative, reaching every decision and doing every act as though making it the universal rule of human conduct, and finally, consequentialism, a decision based on the result, the greatest good for the greatest number of people.

Advancing professionalism needs judicial help
Article Abstract:
The authority to advance professionalism belongs to judges in addition to lawyers. State supreme court judges generally hold inherent power over such matters as standards for fee arrangements, enforcement of professional standards, qualifications to keep practicing, and imposition of sanctions. Examples from various courts show that judges can take the lead in such matters.
