Proposed changes to New South Wales and Tasmanian contaminated site regimes
Article Abstract:
The governments of New South Wales and Tasmania have both released reports that detail intended revisions to their respective contaminated sites laws. The "Position Paper for Contaminated Sites Management System in Tasmania" was issued on Oct. 18, 1996, and sets out the hierarchy of responsibility for contamination and the system for classifying sites based on the risks they pose. Issued on July 5, 1996, "Managing Contaminated Land in NSW: Proposals for a New Legislative and Administrative Framework" identifies planned reforms to remediation and liability provisions.

Contaminated sites management in Western Australia - recent developments
Article Abstract:
The Western Australian Dept of Environmental Protection is proposing a coordinated management framework for identifying and cleaning up contaminated groundwater and land in a Public Position Paper released May 1997. The Paper proposes identification and classification systems, certificates of audit, liability standards, information databases on contaminated sites and groundwater issues and a coordinated framework of administrative and regulatory procedures and standards. The 37 specific proposals are discussed.

Reform of Commonwealth environmental legislation
Article Abstract:
Australia's Minister for the Environment proposed two new environmental laws in 1998. The Environment Protection Act would replace the 1974 act, include ecologically sustainable development principles, and increase government involvement in environmental assessment. The Biodiversity Conservation Act would replace five existing law involving wildlife, provide for bioregional conservation plan development, protect endangered species, and declare parks and reserves.
