Pros and cons of a balanced amendment
Article Abstract:
A balanced federal budget is necessary to stabilize the US economy but would only be a workable alternative if government operations and investment were accounted separately and budget balancing was deferred in hard economic times. The government's projections for balancing the budget in five years are unrealistic and fail to account for increased medical and debt interest costs. The only way to reduce the deficit is tax increases that will further undermine the economy. However, the only viable economic choices are politically unacceptable and would increase government regulations.

A new economic paradigm
Article Abstract:
The reality of an ideal U.S. economy where low inflation is paired with high levels of employment and economic growth cannot last beyond the current Congress and Clinton administration. Many factors have contributed to this ideal economy including a positive budgetary policy, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan's established skills, and fewer congressional spending initiatives. Change in one or more factors will upset the fine balance and the situation is unlikely to remain unchanged with a new president and market changes.

The '98 economy: as good as '97?
Article Abstract:
The US economy will probably see slower growth in 1998 than the previous year, inflation and the stock market should show slight rises, the dollar will weaken slightly, and bonds will probably stabilize at 6.4%. Surprises could come from wage pressures, increased growth from the world market, transportation bottlenecks, higher interest rates, and commodity shocks due to the El Nino weather system.
