Revised recruiting guidelines may bring chaos this autumn
Article Abstract:
Law schools are involved in a controversy concerning the proper date for acceptance of a law firm's offer of employment. The National Assn for Law Placement's new, earlier deadlines of Nov 15 and Dec 15 for replies to job offers hopes to discourage the practice of job offer hoarding until the last minute. This practice made it difficult for law firms to know how many students would take them up on their job offers. However, 16 law schools who are fearful of the impact of the deadline change on campus recruiting and class schedules have pledged to keep the old deadlines.

Interview travel could be cut if teleconferencing takes off
Article Abstract:
VIEWnet of Madison, WI, is marketing to employers and universities its teleconferencing system for interviewing potential employees. It charges the employer $40 for a half-hour interview, compared with $200 for a typical in-person interview. The costs of videoconferencing systems have over the past two years fallen from $100,000 to $5,000, and on-line costs have plunged from $1,000 hourly to $45. Employers say the technology is promising for initial, screening interviews, but cannot replace face-to-face meetings.
