Salary wars waning; law firms hold the line on starting associate pay, opt for bonuses
Article Abstract:
Salaries law firms pay associates have flattened out due to the recession. A survey by Altman Weil Pensa found that firms are relying more on bonuses and merit raises to retain good associates. Average associate pay is about $45,000 a year and the highest pay is about $70,000. Altman Weil believes that the flat pay trend is structural and permanent, having arisen because there is such a large number of lawyers and law school graduates that the job market cannot absorb them all.

Nonfiler program expanded; tax practitioners have incentive to tell IRS about unfiled returns
Article Abstract:
The ABA Section of Taxation works with the IRS on the agency's 'nonfiler' program by publicizing the program and providing legal advice to those who wish to come forward. This IRS program has enjoyed some success in persuading nonfilers to come forward and the Service has expanded the program to include tax practitioners. Tax practitioners who come forward will be privately reprimanded and this reprimand will not affect their firm.

The Oct 22, 1991 ruling was augmented by a Nov 8 ruling doubling damages. Random House may use the word 'Webster's', but not in conjunction with 'college'; 'Random House' must precede the title and be in the same size, type face and color as the rest of the title.
