Schwartz on torts; Victor Schwartz's drive for products liability bill edges ever closer
Article Abstract:
Victor Schwarz is a former law professor, author of a noted textbook on torts, government official and currently attorney with Washington's Crowell and Moring. For the last 10 years, he has been the biggest backer of a federal products liability bill on Capitol Hill. The latest reincarnation of the bill, S-687, would effect partial preemption of state products liability laws by restrictions on punitive damages, stop joint liability for pain and suffering, give incentives for early settlement of cases and have a uniform liability standard for sellers.

Legal woes on campus increase; due process questions are often at the fore
Article Abstract:
Universities are increasingly making use of legal counsel, and subjects of administrative investigations are concerned about receiving their due process rights under the law. Issues litigated include research integrity, civil rights and student behaviors, such as drinking. Subjects of administrative disciplinary proceedings are concerned that these do not necessarily follow due process standards, such as being shown the other side's evidence and being afforded the rights of confrontation and cross-examination.

Sports law practice is no slam dunk; clients are always in the headlines, but so are the problems lawyers face
Article Abstract:
Sports law is a specialty which became big business in the 1970s and a large influx of attorneys into the field started then. Some, such as Joe Garagiola, Jr, the son the former major league catcher and NBS sportscaster, were drafted. Recently the junior Garagiola branched out into baseball management. At the peak of the specialty are the attorneys who work for top players. They say the younger stars require the most maintenance.
