She puts learning ahead of earning
Article Abstract:
Maud Mater, the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp, feels that law firms today pay too much attention to business and too little to serving clients. She also thinks lawyers earn too much. Her staff of 130 includes 72 lawyers. Junior lawyers do not come to her straight from law school, as she considers the law an apprenticeship profession with everyone needing mentoring, which she does not think her agency is able to do. Even junior lawyers come to her with 4 years or more of experience.

Balancing motherhood and the practice of law: the complications can't be lightly dismissed, but it can be done successfully
Article Abstract:
Female lawyers who want to raise a family without leaving their career must consider what schedule to work, how to arrange pay and benefits, and what to tell clients. Many or most work part-time for the first years of motherhood, perhaps working all day for 3-4 days a week, or every day for fewer hours, or on a schedule dictated by work flow. Different clients will require different levels of explanation about the schedule and the lawyer's availability.
