Should the members decide? ABA House to consider holding a referendum on abortion neutrality
Article Abstract:
The ABA House of Delegates will consider in Feb 1993 whether there should be a referendum on association policy towards abortion. The referendum method has never been used for policy issues, and the proper procedures and likely costs are being discussed. Some observers feel a policy of neutrality might keep dissident members from leaving the association, while others feel that the results of a referendum might be unduly influenced by lobbying.

What price membership? A painful resignation from the ABA over the abortion issue
Article Abstract:
A lawyer who resigned from the ABA due to the organization's stand on the abortion issue gives his reasons. To him, human life begins at conception and abortion represents the taking of a life. He favors women's rights and privacy rights but believes human rights must come first. He believes permitting abortion constitutes the first step on a slippery slope of allowing human beings to make life-and-death decisions.
