Sides turn up the heat on assisted suicide; arguments before the 9th Circuit over Washington ban show wide rift on panel
Article Abstract:
In a contentious hearing the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals on Oct 26 considered arguments over a WA constitutional provision barring assisted suicide. Circuit Judge Andrew J Kleinfeld seemed to sharply attack attorney Kathryn L Tucker, representing Compassion in Dying, a right-to- death group. An earler, three-judge hearing led to accusations that judges let their Catholic faith interfere in their decision. The case was closely watched and attracted an enormous number of amici for both positions.

Fraud case is rehearsal for election
Article Abstract:
Bill Honig, California school superintendent, is being tried on felony conflict-of-interest charges for using his job to get contracts for Quality Education Project, a non-profit organization under his wife's direction. The defense is trying to show that the project benefited only California's schoolchildren, not the Honigs. Honig, a liberal Democrat who has fought a string of Republican governors over school funding, feels that the charges are politically motivated.

If it's online, why pay? Internet pioneers say a fee-per-use royalty system is unworkable and obsolete
Article Abstract:
Some internet experts consider fee-per-use royalty arrangements unworkable or obsolete for online material retrieval, and intellectual property lawyers are also in disagreement on the issue. One position holds that 'information wants to be free' while others look to 'rights management technology' to solve the question of billing. Lawyers do agree that the courts are not yet able to settle this issue.
