Some costs benefit companies: study shows many regulations, under GOP attack, actually help industry
Article Abstract:
A recent study by Congress's Office of Technology Assessment shows that many regulations of the sort issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Admin actually benefit industry, but the costs and benefits are hard to measure. Congress may pass legislation requiring govt bodies issuing new rules to consider their likely cost and compare it to the expected benefit, as well as increasing judicial oversight and making other changes industry favors. Neither side truly understands cost-benefit analysis, though, say critics.

Researcher gets 'hot' data on Rocky Flats; finally given access by U.S. agency, he finds that the records were radioactive
Article Abstract:
A struggle over document discovery concerning the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant near Denver, CO, includes a radioactive item. Berger & Montague PC of Philadelphia represents plaintiffs against Dow Chemical Co. and Rockwell International Corp., contractors who ran the plant. Berger representatives say the US Dept of Energy (DOE) has not cooperated in handing over materials and cite an aura of secrecy, while the DOE contends plaintiffs are exceeding the discovery ordered by the court.

Gore sets his sights on the DEA
Article Abstract:
Vice Pres Al Gore wants to cut down on government duplication and waste by merging the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with the FBI. DEAlobbyists are fighting this proposal with a memo that the war on drugs can best be fought by an agency confined to that mission. Proponents of Gore's proposal hope that it would lead to a re-examination of the philosophy behind the drug war, with more funds and effort going to prevention, rehabilitation and education than to enforcement.
