Survey ranks scholarship output as critics say aim is too narrow
Article Abstract:
The IL Inst of Technology, Chicago-Kent Law Review's latest rankings of schools by law review articles published, and of law reviews by citations, had a lukewarm reception. Those involved in the survey say publishing is an important element of legal education and that some schools increase their publishing because of the survey. Critics contend the survey is poorly done and measures an unimportant statistic. Law professors at the U of Chicago School of Law were ranked as by far the most prolific review article writers.

Applicants declined slightly from past record high levels
Article Abstract:
The 1991-1992 school year saw a slight decline in the number of applicants to law schools, while the number of minorities and women applying to law school continues to increase. There is little consensus as to the reasons for the decline. Some think students do not find law school worth the investment during a recession while some are confident of the continued high regard for law degrees and think the increased competition is discouraging applicants.

With fewer applicants and jobs, deans shrink first-year classes
Article Abstract:
A lagging job market and high student debt have caused law schools to limit the numbers in the incoming class. Statistics from the Law School Admission Council recorded dropping applications of potential law students during the early 1990s. The high was 94,000 in 1990-91, the low 78,800 in 1994-95, both for 44,000 first-year places in US law schools. According to the Council, applications for 1996-97 have decreased another 11.5%.
