Ten shopping tricks that will improve your computer (and not deplete your bank account)
Article Abstract:
Ten tips are presented for shopping for a new computer or for improving an existing computer's performance. Adding RAM is an inexpensive and effective way to improve performance for computers that use 72-pin single in-line memory modules (SIMM). A monitor should have a dot pitch of at least .28-mm, and 15-in monitors offer the best price/quality ratio. Users should consider buying Cyrix' 6x86 P150+ chip, which is compatible with Pentium-based systems and typically performs better and costs less than Pentium chips. In the Pentium family, the 133MHz and 150MHz chips provide good price/performance ratios. Pentium Pro processors do not provide real performance improvements except for users who are working with 32-bit applications and operating systems. Users should look for system boards that have integrated PCI Enhanced IDE hard disk controllers. Users should choose products that have proven reliable over time.
