High Court listens to challenges on voting district
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court on Apr 19, 1995, heard two racially charged cases alleging voter discrimination and in the same week handed down several important or unusual decisions. The discrimination cases involve voting districts in Georgia and Louisiana that the plaintiffs say are racially gerrymandered. The justices granted a new trial to Louisiana death-row inmate Curtis Lee Kyles on habeas grounds, a rare move, and found unconstitutional Ohio's prohibition on anonymous campaign literature.

Court ducks affirmative action case
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court has not granted certiorari to the noted US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit case of Texas v. Hopwood. The 5th Circuit ruled in this case that the University of Texas law school's affirmative action admissions program constituted un-constitutional race discrimination. The law the US Supreme Court enunciated in Regents of University of California v. Bakke reamins in effect outside the 5th Circuit.
