The Federal Communications Commission has addressed whether Internet telephony providers must pay access charges, as well as other Internet issues
Article Abstract:
The FCC has yielded to the wishes of established telephone companies and some members of Congress to make some regulation of Internet telephony in view of such rapid growth in this innovation that conventional telephony might be affected. In so doing, the FCC has stated it will preserve the free market for the Internet, unfettered by regulation. The FCC will concentrate on phone-to-phone Internet services which are functionally equivalent to conventional telecommunications systems. This represents a departure for the FCC away from its previously not regulating Internet services.
