The UN years: Lachs the diplomat
Article Abstract:
International Court of Justice Judge Manfred Lachs' death on Jan 14, 1993, brought to a close one of the most distinguished careers in international law. After studying law in Poland, Austria, France and England, Lachs served as a representative of Poland in several UN bodies, most notably as Chair of the General Assembly's Legal Committee. Lachs then became an official Polish delegate to the UN before joining the International Court of Justice. Lachs also wrote several books on international law, including one on war crimes and one on teaching international law.

Article Abstract:
The late International Court of Justice Manfred Lachs' lectures in international law at the Hague Academy of International Law are memorable. They demonstrated how international law was influenced by history and how an understanding of this history was crucial to improving international relations. Lachs' General Course in Public International Law was instrumental in getting international lawyers to consider problems such as environmental pollution and poverty as global ones to be addressed universally.

On the bench: Lachs the judge
Article Abstract:
Manfred Lachs, died on Jan 14, 1993, after serving for 26 on the International Court of Justice. As the Court's longest serving member, Judge Lachs was involved in many controversial opinions, including the decision asserting jurisdiction to decide the legality of US-El Salvador covert operations in Nicaragua. Judge Lachs was also key in shaping Court procedure, serving as Chair of the Court's Rules Committee and overseeing the revision of the Rules of Court.
