The Year 2000 problem
Article Abstract:
Every business in the world is facing a deadline at midnight, Jan 1, 2000. Researchers estimate the costs of Year 2000 compliance at between $300 and $600 billion worldwide. The problems could extend beyond computers to phone switches, voice mail systems, building security systems, elevators and more. A 12-step program to Year 2000 compliance is presented. The initial step is to form a compliance team and to develop a plan. All efforts should be documented. Any new hardware or software that is purchased should be Year 2000-compliant. User education efforts can reduce compliance efforts by as much as 25 percent. Liaisons should be appointed for each department in the company and a task force should assess the building's systems, including the telephone systems. Companies should work closely with their vendors and their clients to address compliance problems. Complete cooperation from all management levels will be needed to adequately address this problem.

Surviving the IS cattle auction
Article Abstract:
Recruiting and retaining skilled IS personnel is becoming increasingly difficult as the demand for such employees far outweighs the available supply. To attract and retain employees, firms must be willing to provide adequate compensation, including bonuses and benefits. Although it is difficult to determine salaries in the industry at large, employers and employees must reach a consensus on what the individual employee is worth. Employers must provide their workers with training, or else the company will fall behind technologically. To keep good employees, companies must have a steady stream of interesting work, or talented staff members will leave to find jobs where with more possibilities. In addition to these considerations, employers must also provide employees with recognition and the promise of job stability. Team dynamics plays an important role in retaining employees as does self-actualization.
