The largest jury verdict of 1999 are surveyed, and the largest, one for $4.9 bil against General Motors for designing the Malibu in such a defective way that the gas tank exploded during a rear-end collision and caused devastating injuries to four children who were trapped in the back of the car. The survey is divided by broad subject areas.
