The look of a winner
Article Abstract:
The 1996 ABA Journal Law Office Design Competition showed designers letting branch offices reflect an independent style rather than just be clones of the home office. Materials, furniture and details reflect cohesiveness. Durability is also a concern of designers as firms are more concerned about the bottom line. Glass walls and skylights make work spaces more cheerful and enhance employees' productivity. Lighter palettes contribute to vitality. Photographs of winners in five categories are given.

Winning with style
Article Abstract:
Winners in the ABA Journal's annual Law Office Design Competition all showed good detailing and design fundamentals; sought comfort, views, and natural light; and reflected each firm's individual and corporate personalities. Only 82 firms entered, down from 100 in 1994, and three of the seven categories went unawarded. Winners in the Small Firm with Budget/Design Constraints, Small Firm with Less Than 20,000 Sq Ft, Large Firm, and Total Restoration categories are shown.

Graceful exits: careful planning in a partnership agreement can take the acrimony out of firm defections
Article Abstract:
Law firms should prepare for partners' departures well in advance, ideally in the partnership agreement, spelling out financial arrangements, client matters, and related points. Such events can otherwise become traumatic emotional events, sometimes debilitating firms. Courts have held that both lawyer and firm must follow certain general procedures regarding discussions with clients, and one 1994 ruling upheld a firm's noncompete clause, contrary to the prior trend.
