Mediation - a growing means for settling divorce conflicts
Article Abstract:
Mediation is being used increasingly to settle divorces. Over half the states in the US provide for mediation of divorce and child custody issues in their courts. There has been some criticism of using mediation for divorce, when women are not made to feel equal in the process, but the success rate for mediated divorces is high, except in cases involving domestic violence. Studies show that mediation of divorces appears to help children involved adjust easier to their new situation.

Why are so few women in the ADR field?
Article Abstract:
The dearth of women in the arbitrator profession is changing slowly, but its persistence can be attributed to the 'old boy network' and the need for a great deal of experience to become well known in the field, coupled with the fact that women's representation in larger numbers is quite recent. Women are better represented among mediators than arbitrators. Women desiring to make their presence known in the field are advised to publish and attend conferences.
