Thinking strategically about automation
Article Abstract:
Because law office automation projects are so expensive, complex and time-consuming, failure is less an option than ever before. Therefore, automation projects should address definable business problems of clear financial importance. In general, upgrades should not be implemented all at once. Specific hardware and software should not be purchased until the office is ready to install and use it. Every law office ought to deploy some basic technologies. Networks or LANs, useful even in very small offices, enable employees to exchange messages and share work product. Networked legal research software systems help offices share research via CD-ROMs. In addition, litigation support databases let offices store information on documents, deposition support excerpts or full transcripts.
