Trade spike spurs tax treaty talks; multinationals press Clinton administration to end double taxation
Article Abstract:
The US Treasury Dept is working to expand the country's somewhat limited tax treaties in hopes of obtaining better tax deals for multinational business enterprises. Such businesses are pressing for this in an era when global trade is booming. Goals include the elimination of anti-competitive double taxation and other burdensome consequences of a bad or absent treaty. The fast-growing economies of Latin America and Asia are targets. The US has 48 tax treaty partners, less than most developed countries.
