Corporate downsizing and the supervisory and managerial exclusions of the National Labor Relations Act
Article Abstract:
The National Labor Relations Act's policy of protecting employees who would otherwise not enjoy liberty of contract would permit labor unions for middle management, a group of employees disproportionately affected by the downsizing of the 1990s. Labor law may have paid undue interest to the idea of loyal management, and the time may have come to unionize these workers. Presently, neither labor law nor corporate paternalism adequately protects them.

The Major League Umpires Association: a study in pragmatism and opportunism
Article Abstract:
The Major League Umpires Ass'n has represented umpires since 1969 and improvement in the umpires' lot during this time has been no accident. The association has been both pragmatic and opportunistic. There have been five strikes since its inception and the performance of the replacement workers the league brought in was so below par that management felt much pressure to settle. The association has been blessed with good leaders since the start.
