Viagra spawn birth control issue; advocates invoke bias laws in urging insurance coverage of contraceptives
Article Abstract:
Refusal of insurance companies to cover the potency drug Viagra is spotlighting the decade-long difficulty of women in getting insurance coverage for birth control. This lack of insurance coverage for birth control services causes the much larger out-of-pocket medical expenses women pay than men. Lawyers think grounds exist for a Title VII lawsuit for this denial of coverage, including the law's prohibition of policies neutral in form but discriminatory in effect and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act's barring employer policies from discriminatory policies affecting pregnancy.

Special treatment: a one-of-a-kind court may offer the best hope for steering nonviolent mentally ill defendants into care instead of jail
