Victims of omission; employers can face liability for negligent hiring practices when workers commit acts of violence
Article Abstract:
Employers should check references carefully because they may otherwise be liable if employees commit violent crimes. Government statistics reveal that murder is the second-leading cause of job-related deaths, and nearly a million employees are the victims of nonfatal violence each year, often at the hands of co-employees. Employers can suffer business loss, bad publicity, and the crime victims can also file negligent hiring suits.
