Legal ethics; in-house MDPs
Article Abstract:
The multidisciplinary law practice question as it relates to corporate counsel is discussed. The US bar and business community may be well served by multidisciplinary practice which would let in-house lawyers widen their circle of clients beyond the corporate employer/client. Such arrangements are common in foreign countries, and flexibility and economy could result.

Legal ethics; in-house privilege
Article Abstract:
Issues are discussed regarding the application of attorney-client privilege law to work done by inside legal counsel for the corporation. Corporate counsel should communicate only with a 'lawyer' and steer clear of counsel functioning as a nonlawyer to minimize violations of this law.

What will the tobacco fees set in motion?
Article Abstract:
The $8.2 bil fee awarded the plaintiffs lawyers in the Florida, Mississippi and Texas tobacco cases by a fee-arbitration panel was not reasonable, and was certainly undeserved. The panel's attorneys offered as justification the risk the lawyers assumed. The main risk the lawyers assumed was the value of the legal business they would have had while litigating the tobacco cases, which was surely much smaller than the fees they awarded themselves. There is also something awry with the measurement of the fees against the recovery of the three state clients
