What's liberty's scope? Assisted suicide was court's focus, abortion the subtext
Article Abstract:
The central issue in the assisted-suicide cases of Vacco v. Quill and Washington v. Glucksberg argued before the US Supreme Court on Jan 8, 1997, was the existence of a constitutional liberty interest in the right to assisted suicide of a terminally ill, competent patient. Laurence Tribe argued that it was the interest of such a patient not to be forced by the state to endure great pain and suffering relievable only by drugs which induce unconsciousness. The reluctance of the court to overturn the assisted suicide bans in 49 states was apparent by the end of the oral arguments.

Impeachment lessons for the House are stark; next time, members should be sure of evidence, bipartisanship and more
Article Abstract:
Lessons the House of Representatives should learn from the expected failure of the impeachment articles against Pres Bill Clinton include the need to build a better evidentiary record and to look hard at the burden of proof carried before proceeding with the articles of impeachment. The impeachment trial of Pres Bill Clinton also shows that a presidential impeachment requires a bipartisan consensus and that the Senate's concern is more with public misconduct than with private misdeeds.

Amicus disclosure worries some amici
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court has proposed a rule requiring the authors of amicus briefs to fully disclose both financial and other help in the briefs' preparation. Critics fear this proposed Rule 37.6 may have a chilling effect, especially on public interest law organizations without great financial means.
