What's up with Coudert Brothers? Partners are coming and going, going and coming, as the firm develops a plan for self preservation
Article Abstract:
The 143-year-old law firm of Coudert Brothers has gone through enough moves of prominent partners to other firms to leave observers wondering. Some feel the firm is reacting by reinventing itself. Two telecommunications partners and several corporate finance and securities partners are moving to Coudert from other firms. Anthony C. Kahn, a member of the firm's executive committee, says the firm is aiming forn more local clients in foreign countries instead of relying just on multinational ones. Some observers feel the firm is losing its international clients and concentrating more on New York sources of profit.

N.Y. lawyer facing divorce? Beware; state is the only one to value practice and license of professionals as marital property
Article Abstract:
Divorcing professionals in New York state should beware, for that state's courts considers professional education and a professional practice to be part of marital property. These awards are in addition to alimony and child support and are supposed to compensate spouses performing household responsibilities while a partner builds a career. Attorneys feel the practice is particularly unjust since, until recently, the state's legal ethics barred the sale of law practices, and such sales are still infrequent. The 1985 New York Court of Appeals case of O'Brien v. O'Brien started the valuation revolution.

Shanghai exit for Coudert; firm violated its license to practice in one city. But some hint there's a plot
Article Abstract:
Coudert Brothers will become the second US law firm after Baker and McKenzie to close its offices in Shanghai, China. Shanghai is attracting billions in foreign investment, and both law firms will still do business there. The closing of Shanghai offices Hong Kong happened because the firms ran afoul of Chinese Justice Ministry rules when they placed lawyers in two cities despite being licensed to practice only in Beijing. There are allegations that rival British law firms told the Chinese of the allegations.
