Be careful what you wish for: U.S. politics and the future of the national security exception to the GATT
Article Abstract:
The US' justification under the national security exception of art. 21 of GATT for sanctions found in the Helms-Burton Act and the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act threatens the potency of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The US' use of the national security exception in dispute-resolution may encourage a proliferation of such exceptions, weakening the effect of WTO. WTO may lose the critical support of the US should the US loses in dispute-resolution.
