Who's sorry now? Media defendants' high-profile apologies are cheaper than litigation
Article Abstract:
Large media companies seem increasingly eager to use an apology to settle or resolve libel disputes, though not all observers agree on the trend's importance. Recent examples include Prodigy Services' response to a Stratton Oakmont lawsuit, ABC's apology to Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds Tobacco, and Cable News Network's contrition to a US district judge. Critics say the growing corporate nature of large news organizations is to blame, and others note the role impending takeovers seem to play in such decisions.

Cutting classes: many law schools are shrinking along with the job market
Article Abstract:
Many law schools are cutting class size for a variety of reasons, though some experts consider it an unimportant anomaly. Most of the schools reporting smaller incoming classes cite a poor job market for graduates, fewer applications and the need to maintain quality for students and employers alike. Others say special circumstances are to blame, and many schools depend on tuition too much to cut class size. Of the ABA's 177 accredited law schools, 76 had smaller incoming classes in 1994 than 1993.

A lawyer group with a mission: Guild tries to buck Communist label, conservative tide
Article Abstract:
The National Lawyers Guild currently has 4,100 members nationwide but membership has dropped to as low as 500 in the 1950s because of accusations that the Guild was Communist. The Guild addresses leading social issues that often place it in conflict with the government resulting in the Communist label and a 40-year FBI surveillance. Current issues include embattled California immigrants' rights and the counterterrorism bill which are seen as resulting from the strength of conservatives.
