With affirmative action rulings, more minorities look for PALS
Article Abstract:
The Practicing Attorneys for Law Students program reports increased interest among minority law students in its seminars, workshops, and mentor programs in the wake of recent affirmative-action decisions. The 11-year-old New York program seeks to help minority students get through law school and pass the bar exam. Its 1993-1994 budget of $104,000 comes from grants and donations, and all its services are free to the students. Alumni of the program, which operates at New York's 13 law schools, say it was enormously helpful.

Held in custody with Harry Wu, student learned Chinese 'justice.' (law student Sue Howell)
Article Abstract:
Sue Howell, a third-year student at the North Carolina Central University School of Law, joined Harry Wu on his trip to China in June and was detained with him for four days near Kazakhstan. Fellow students say the 45-year-old Howell is unusual, with strong interests in human rights, policy, and why law has its present form. She notes that professors and students treat her differently since she appeared on a slew of news shows, and she prefers her summer's excitement to the tedium of outlines and classes.
