Workplace warriors: wife/husband team are union-like negotiators for non-union workers
Article Abstract:
Smith Mullin PC partners Neil Mullin and Nancy Erika Smith successfully combine a high-pressure, high-profile labor-law litigation practice with their own marriage to each other. Long before whistle-blower, civil rights, and bias cases became the trendy area of labor law, they were fighting on behalf of common workers and well-paid executives alike. Opponents and colleagues nationwide respect their tenacity and talent. They shrug off criticism of their white-collar client list, saying it pays for pro bono cases.

Younger leaders taking charge; law firms look to a new generation for leadership
Article Abstract:
Law firm administrators are coming increasingly from the ranks of younger lawyers rather than older lawyers who become managers on the basis of seniority. This is because of economic pressures, the evolution of law practice into a business, and the recognition that lawyers with a great deal of seniority are not necessarily the best managers. There is also a demographic factor, namely, that the baby boomers are coming of age.

The legal field sees a glimmer of recovery; many top firms are still shrinking, but not quite as many as last year
Article Abstract:
The 1993 National Law Journal survey of the 250 largest US firms shows that this was the first time since the latter part of the 1980s that the number of large law firms laying off attorneys has gone down. The recovery is, however, only regional, with firms in the Southeast and Northeast performing better than those in the Southwest and West. Boutique firms showed the best growth.
