Year 2000 issue may be glitch, not a crisis, thanks to attorneys
Article Abstract:
Preemptive actions by attorneys may have lessened the eventual damage to be realized by the year 2000 computer problem. The glitch apparent in most computer and software system amounts to nonrecognition of dates past the year 1999. Concern has been widespread throughout business and industry that the 00 of the year 2000 will be read as 1900 in computer programs calculating everything from payrolls to government benefits. Software companies' attorneys who had warned and advised of probable liability may have saved millions of dollars for corporate America.

E-litigation; e-mail law expands
Article Abstract:
The body of case law regarding electronic mail has grown substantially in view of the omnipresence of this medium and as this judge-made law develops, e-mail will touch any aspect of communication or speech crimes, such as price-fixing, conspiracy or extortion. Privacy litigation has much precedent, but is still hotly litigated. A company's actions when discovering damaging e-mail can be evidence of a hostile work environment, one example of how much e-mail law overlaps with employment questions.

Laws on e-sigs inked; competing technologies test states' definitions of an electronic signature
Article Abstract:
Electronic commerce needs verified signatures and, by late Oct 1997, all but 5 states had laws dealing with electronic signatures either in effect or pending as bills. The Internet ignores state boundaries, though, which makes a federal law necessary. Sen Bob Bennett plans to introduce such a law in early 1998 which would standardize electronic signature requirements and make online banking easier.
