BBC 2's Root to success
Article Abstract:
BBC 2 controller Jane Root faces growing competition from cable and satellite as well as from its 3 established terrestrial rivals. BBC 2 retained its lead over Channel 4 in 1998, but its overall market share dropped to 11.3, down from 11.6 in 1997. Root stresses that she will not be tearing up BBC 2's programming and starting fresh, but she does plan some structural changes. Children's BBC may possibly be moved from BBC 1 to BBC 2 in the afternoon. Root is also thought to be considering a rethinking of such factual programming as "Modern Times," adding drama, entertainment, and comedy to the mix.
