Article Abstract:
ITV has steadily declined in popularity among television viewers in the UK over recent weeks. Its share of overall viewing for the week ending May 18, 1997, was 31.9%, with BBC1 at 32.9%, and it is facing strong competition from cable, satellite and Channel 5. BBC1 now seems very aware of the vulnerable parts of ITV's schedule, and many observers believe that ITV has not responded adequately to this challenge. The ITV network is to be restructured as ITV Ltd later in 1997, and this may reverse its fortunes.
