Commercial radio holds lead over BBC
Article Abstract:
BBC radio broadcasting business has once again lost in the battle for listeners in the UK, controlling only 46.8% of the market compared to 51.1% share held by commercial radio for the period covering March 1998 to June 1998. The growth posted by commercial radio has been attributed to the strong performances exhibited by the three major national comercial stations, Talk Radio, Classic FM and Virgin Radio. The boost in audience for local stations across UK also contributed to the overall boost achieved by commercial radio. National commercial radio also saw the number of its listeners grow to 11.8 million per week from 11.3 million a week in the same period in 1997.

Is it really on?
Article Abstract:
The pricing and content plans for On Digital, the digital terrestrial television service put up by Carlton and Granada, were presented in early-October 1998. Considered as a possible direct competitor to Sky Digital, On Digital supposedly offers the advantage of ease of use, as it does not require cable lines or a satellite dish. In addition, it claims to offer simplicity as it offers a selection of 30 top channels, compared to a homogenous roster of 200 channels from Sky Digital, and that it allows its subscribers to change their selection of channels whenever they want, in On Digital's so-called Primary Package.
