Distributing the news
Article Abstract:
The manner in which newspapers and magazines are distributed affects the reader's access to information. A study of the distribution laws and history in France, the US and the UK determined that such access is affected by regulations. The US is unique because of its size and has few national papers. France and the UK, however, have several national newspapers. France has distribution laws requiring merchants to distribute all newspapers and periodicals offered, with few exceptions, and wholesalers do not pay for the product. No such situation occurs in the UK or the US, which are more fully free market oriented. The study was intended as a base for future research.

Policing the public sphere: the British machinery of news management
Article Abstract:
The official British government propaganda organizations started during the war years were formally dismantled, but did not disappear. Many mechanisms designed to promote and explain British policy at home and abroad were redistributed among other organizations, such as the Central Office of Information. While it is in the interest of British government public relations managers to present an image of neutral information provision and responsiveness to public opinion, the reality is that censorship and management of news continues.

A developing market in news: Xinhua News Agency and Chinese newspapers
Article Abstract:
A social-historical analysis of China's Xinhua News Agency and Chinese newspapers, focusing on their inter-relations is presented. It attempts to delineate how a national news agency in a non-capitalist country went through a process of development, and how it has changed during the transition from a command economy to market-oriented economy.
