Double dealing
Article Abstract:
New UK terrestrial broadcaster Channel 5 and British Broadcasting Corporation have signed a $40 million deal to jointly purchase a package of 68 films from 20th Century Fox International TV. This will give Channel 5 exclusive rights to 37 of the titles and shared rights for nine of the others of which it will have the first UK television run of 'Independence Day' and 'Speed'. The deal demonstrates the flexibility of Channel 5's strategy, the willingness of its shareholders to find extra cash for commercially viable propositions and makes Channel 5 a credible force in the media world.

UKTV won't challenge ITC's quality rejection
Article Abstract:
UKTV, a Channel 5 franchise bidder, will not challenge the decision by the Independent Television Commission to reject its bid, although its 36 million pounds sterling could have been an automatic winner. The ITC thought the proposals did not meet all the quality criteria. The UKTV consortium including Can-West, Ten Network and Scandinavian Broadcasting System, will meet to decide the future of UKTV.
