Media and Congress
Article Abstract:
Conflicts between the Congress and the media date back to the latter's coverage of the first sessions of Congress. The Congress can make communication policies that affects the media's functional effectiveness. The President has always been more extensively covered by the media than the Congress. However, House Speaker Newt Gingrich has generated wide publicity for his office and the Congress. The national media covers the Congress more systematically than the regional media. Although the Congress projects openness to the media, most of its members view it as their enemy.

The new Luddites
Article Abstract:
Newspaper publishers should realize that the First Amendment's clause on free press applies to all communication industries and is not constrained to the publishing industry. Further, the concern of the First Amendment is not the welfare of these industries but the democratization of access to information by the public in whatever form and means. In this light, the negative attitudes traditional media have towards emerging technologies will have to change.

Images that injure
Article Abstract:
A free press is essential for both a free market and free speech that contribute to a country's prosperity. The US and Canada owe much of their stability to democratic traditions based on freedom of the press which have allowed them to survive political and economic calamities with little effect. The media enjoys rights and privileges in a democratic society but also assumes important responsibilities and obligations.
