Naked bodies, runaway ratings: TV Nova and the Czech Republic
Article Abstract:
TV Nova, the first private television station in Central and Eastern Europe, began broadcasting in the Czech Republic in Feb 1994. It gained a very large market share almost immediately, attracting many viewers away from Czech public television. It won the rights to many US situation comedies, soap operas, drama series and films, and now controls three-quarters of the Czech advertising market. Some observers feel that TV Nova is lowering broadcasting standards, but it does actually show innovative programmes.

The best seat in the house?
Article Abstract:
American television companies will broadcast classical drama, poetry, opera and fine arts programs in a bid to revive the classics. The opening up of a wide cross-section of channels, followed by the market demands of commercial televisions, had decreased the number of quality fine arts programs in the past. The proliferation of channels will provide the audience with a wider choice of programs that will enable them to watch programs of their liking.

The electronic republic
Article Abstract:
Advances in telecommunications technology are shrinking the distance between those who govern and the governed. Ironically, this is occurring at a time when citizens are more frustrated with government and feel increasingly powerless. Today the US has the first generation of citizens that can simultaneously communicate with and judge their political leaders. The advent of the 'electronic republic' is redefining political leadership and citizen roles.
