Newspapers and national identity: the BSE/CJD crisis and the British press
Article Abstract:
Humans are composed of multiple social identities, but dominant media representations of national identity deny complexity. The British press represented the "mad cow" crisis as a threat to the nation's health, using terms like "we" and "us" to denote national identity. The press constructed fundamental symbolic differences between the identities of Britain and the rest of Europe.
