Organizing democratic radio: issues in praxis
Article Abstract:
Ideally, democratic communications systems such as community radio should extend democratic participation in society, increase the diversity of information presented and follow a democratic model of organization. The last of these three ideals may be the hardest to reach, in part because there are no set guidelines for how to run a community radio station. Decisions must be made about whether the station serves the community, or vice versa; who forms the radio's 'community'; to what extent the audiences will participate in program production; and who decides what is legitimate programming.

Cultural aspects of constraints on village education by radio
Article Abstract:
Attempts at educating rural villagers in Ghana via radio failed because cultural factors were not taken into account. The manner in which villagers meet and communicate made the one-way aspect of radio unpopular. In addition, unrealistic broadcast times, poor technological facilities, and language barriers hampered efforts. Educators should focus on indigenous village communications systems, such as gathering villagers at traditionally accepted meeting places. Radio should play a secondary, supplemental role.
