Set regions free with local TV
Article Abstract:
The Broadcasting in the Nations and Regions Conference in Salford, addresses tough questions on the question of regional identity and non-news programming. ITV has changed from regional broadcasting to a national broadcaster, while the BBC is moving to embrace regionalism and local programming on an unprecedented scale. Ofcom has identified regional programming as an area of concern. Delinking regional programming hours from ITV, issuing regional licences and right to sell airtime to companies and groups dedicated to the region is suggested to develop local TV markets and reflect the growing sense of regional identity.
