Article Abstract:
The introduction of digital terrestrial television will enable broadcasters to produce and transmit programmes in widescreen format. UK stations such as BBC and ITV are already planning their future programming in widescreen and as the public exchanges the old analogue sets for new digital ones, the benefits of widescreen will be widely experienced. Forty channels transmitted 57,000 hours of widescreen programmes in Europe from 1992 to 1996, while in 1995 only 4,200 widescreen receivers were sold in the UK. Viewers' resistance to the letterbox shape of the screen should eventually be overcome.

Reality cheque in Amsterdam
Article Abstract:
Quantel's Henry and Discreet Logic's Inferno are hot favourites for IBC delegates with one million pounds sterling to spend; while Discreet Logic's Flame or Smoke suites would suit those with only 500,000 pounds to spend. Jale 02, JaleOctane, Quantel's Editbox Platinum, Newtek's Lightwave software, and Discreet Logic's Paint and Effect are options for the more modest buyer.
