The death of a reporter
Article Abstract:
The political aspects of American reporter George Polk is discussed in three books. Elias Vlanton's 'Who Killed George Polk?,' alleges the US government's hand in the murder, as the government was averse to Polk's criticism of its aid package to Greece. 'The Salonica Bay Murder' by Edmund Keeley, is a detailed account of the US and Greek government's alliance with some journalists in suppressing various facts of the murder of Polk. Kati Marton's version of Polk's murder in 'The Polk Conspiracy' is inconsistent with facts although it builds a persuasive case on the reasons for the murder.

Lessons from American history
Article Abstract:
The history of the US press shows a tradition of violence committed against journalists. During the Revolutionary movement, the idea of the freedom of press was invoked but was seldom practised, as the Patriots monopolized the freedom to publish. In the 18th and early 19th century, Americans believed more in the power of crowd action than in the power of the press. By the end of 19th century, journalists were attacked by individuals rather than by mobs. Nowadays, mainstream journalists are rarely assaulted as the journalists are more professional and objective than their predecessors.
