The homogenization of Hollywood
Article Abstract:
The takeover of independent production companies and studios in Hollywood is resulting in loss of creative risk taking and uniformity of story content in Hollywood films. The rift between the creative aim of the moviemakers and the studio's continual pressure to churn out stereotypical action-oriented plotlines have always been a source of tension. Studio executives are wary of experimenting with artistic films as audience taste is prone to change. The uniform formulas and rising costs have led to less than one third of all Hollywood movies grossing a profit.

Hollywood goes to Congress
Article Abstract:
Five US films since the 1940s on the Congress and its members reveal Americans' attitude towards the Congress. These films are increasingly depicting the Congress as one-dimensional. Politicians are portrayed as decent people and having been corrupted by the system and evil political brokers. In all these films, the role of the press in politics is highlighted. These films greatly influence public reaction to politics, as seen from the effect 'Distinguished Gentleman' had on President George Bush's tenure. The 5 films are reviewed in detail.

Nixon goes to China
Article Abstract:
President Richard M. Nixon's official state visit to China in 1972 appears to have been staged primarily to enable the nation to see him there and to depict the leader as a great man of peace. A scrutiny of the state visit will show that he did nothing of particular significance nor conducted any serious business in China. That the visit likely generated votes is true but it is also true is that thanks to Nixon and other anti-Communist baiters, China the 'Red menace' was to be excluded from the US and world affairs from 1952-1972.
