Three falling: has ITV lost its popular touch? With the network inreasingly reliant on soaps to deliver the ratings, its needs to find a fresh crop of hits to avoid becoming hidebound
Article Abstract:
ITV is increasingly relying on soaps to deliver the ratings, but has taken steps to improve afternoons. However its main task is to improve peak time and it is planning to introduce more 'event' nights for the autumn. It lacks factual formats comparable with Animal Hospital and Antiques Roadshow. ITV's share of peaktime viewing is currently just over 38% from 40% during the past two years.

BBC 2 after the fall: only BBC2 managed to increase both its share and average viewing hours in autumn, BBC1 had its best season for a decade with three new 'hit' series, but it comes in a lacklustre season as ITV consolidated on proven successes
Article Abstract:
BB2 increased its share and average hours of viewing in autumn 1994 in both daytime and evening hours. BBC1 was not so successful with Sunday night viewing, with its Seaforth, Songs of Praise, Lovejoy and Birds of a Feather competiing with ITV's Heartbeat, You've Been Framed! and London's Burning.
